What is your current role?: Business Development Manager for Dersch Design & Engineering, an electrical engineering firm that designs power and lighting systems.
What brought you into the AEC marketing industry?: I actually fell into this industry by happenstance. After graduating from Northern Illinois University in 2003 with a degree in Psychology, I moved to San Diego in my early 20’s and began working in the hospitality industry. When I decided it was time for a change, I began looking for a new career path and was hired on as a Project Coordinator to assist the firm with a large portfolio of projects that had recently been awarded. I quickly began taking on added responsibilities, expanded my role, and worked my way up to Business Development Manager. The customer service and interpersonal skills I developed in the hospitality industry have laid a solid foundation for my success as a marketer. Everything else I’ve learned on the job through virtue of having amazing coworkers and colleagues, a love for learning, as well as great mentors and support from organizations like SMPS.
What is your favorite SMPS memory?: I participated in the 2019-2020 SMPS Lessons in Leadership program and found it very educational and rewarding. In addition to attending a year’s worth of monthly presentations on different leadership topics, I was mentored by Beth Bateman of Bateman Communications for an entire year. As part of the program, she helped me develop a marketing plan and strategy for my art business Sadlicki Modern Art https://www.sadlicki.com/ consisting of the creation of a new body of work, complete rebranding, a new website, new social media feeds, social media campaigns, email marketing campaigns, developing target markets, and implementing a strategy to sell more work. I am happy to report that I have sold numerous paintings as a result of this project, and my art business has directly benefited. The skills gained while working on my personal project with Beth have also directly helped me in my role as a marketer for Dersch Design & Engineering.
What’s your favorite San Diego landmark?: As cliché as it sounds, I love the ocean and anything near the coast. As a Chicago native, I discovered San Diego when I was in college and my band was invited to play the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon. We loaded up a van, toured the Western U.S., and ended up playing the Rock and Roll Marathon gig at mile 18.5 near Mission Bay. Afterwards, we stayed in San Diego for a few days and spent a LOT of time at the beach. I decided right then and there I was going to move to San Diego once I graduated, and the rest is history. To this day I’ve never lost my love for the ocean and being near the water. Not having to shovel snow is also a big bonus!
What is your dream vacation destination?: I really want to see Europe, specifically France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Greece. I really love history and art, and I would love to see many of the noteworthy historical sites and famous works of art in these countries. My wife and I plan to visit Europe in the next few years, and I can’t wait!
What’s a cause you’re passionate about?: I am very passionate about universal healthcare, equal rights, environmental policy, criminal justice reform, workers’ rights, wealth inequality, affordable housing, nuclear nonproliferation, and generally improving society and the lives of the less fortunate among us through political activism and legislative reform.
